I Love the Bible - written by Clarence E. Davis II

The world is in need of authentic truth; in fact, it’s searching for it. Every day across social media platforms, pop-cultural magazines, and news broadcasting, there is competition, not just for the consumer’s attention but also for the consumer’s appetite. As these various outlets vie to present truth to the masses, something remains vacant. What is truth? After all of the “fake news” reported, sources vetted, and statements fact-checked, the search for truth still looms beyond this arena of information. However, therein lies the problem. The world is inquiring through reams of information to find some personal relevance or meaning; the world searches for significance by connecting to things they describe are “bigger than themselves.” Perhaps they’ve stopped short of their discovery. Possibly, St. Augustine was right in his confession, “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.” It’s probable that in looking for something bigger than themselves, the world is still pining for definition because they never went big enough.

It is at this juncture, through humanity’s vain attempt to locate something beyond themselves to offer explanations to their existential questions, that God reveals Himself. It is upon this backdrop of soul-seeking and hopelessness that God has provided to humanity not only the answers they look for but the Answer Himself. It is here that my love for the Bible arrives. It’s adequately noted and observed by a great theologian that “the Bible is full of history, but isn’t a history book. The Bible has science in it but isn’t it a science book-the Bible is more than these things. It is the word of God revealing Himself to all humankind to introduce Jesus Christ, the savior of the whole world.” [DAKES] The Bible is more than some ancient relic of divine wisdom. It provides solutions to questions of who we are and why we are here. Yes, it too has gone through a litany of ridicule, scrutiny, and vivisection, only to be found historically reliable, scientifically verifiable, and philosophically sound. Furthermore, I must mention its unity of subject matter that stretches across centuries from more than 40 authors. The Bible is the word of God, time-tested, and trustworthy.

Perhaps the biggest reason for my affection, outside of its inerrancy, is that the Bible speaks to me. Of course, I don’t mean the pages flutter at a rapid pace, building up a breeze that turns into an audible voice. However, the Word of God speaks to my soul. It tells me of God, who seems unreachable in His moral character, and unapproachable in His untainted purity. Yet, I’m amazed by His love and voluntary acts of benevolence witnessed in the Scriptures and my personal life. It tells me of my need to change if I were to have a personal relationship with God. Yet, before I become highminded and think I can change myself, I’m informed that I’m powerless outside the consent of my will to change. Transformation into something beyond myself has to come from a power beyond myself. That power expresses itself through a person, Jesus Christ, the Son of God; His life and example shine through the pages of this beautiful revelation from God. Yes, I love the bible, as it continues to order my steps upon life’s journey in a personal way. My love for it is but a response to the God who loved me enough to speak “in the beginning.” It's a love that I cherish, a love that I live, a love that I wear. I love the Bible, do you?
